The chemistry indicated by this analysis is: Ca4.62Fe2.27(AsO4)3O75 , normalized for 3 As. This result is heavy on the Ca, and has lots of extra oxygen (an issue we frequently see on our analyses). Minerals that include only Ca, Fe, As, O include Arseniosiderite, Barahonaite-(Fe), Kolfanite, Lazarenkoite, Sewardite, Walentaite, Wallkilldellite-(Fe), Yukonite |

Bob Wilken specimens & photos Notes: [bw] By the crystal form, this appears to be a member of the Jahnsite group. This is largely a disorderly mass of vertically striated yellow crystals that are fused together. Fortunately, as seen in the second photo, there is a group of individual crystals too. With thirteen different Jahnsites plus keckite, it is not easy to nail down. Within the group, color varies widely from pale yellowish whites to dark, rich browns, red-browns to almost black. Keckite is the one that appears to display strident yellows but also brownish yellows to pale yellow whites. A polished grain EDS analysis indicated the jansite group (Jahnsite-CaMnMn), is a best fit. |

A Bob Wilken specimen & photo Notes: [bw] The crystals have a greasy luster, as well as some patchy black coating (Mn?), and the terminations of the broccoli-bunched crystals are not well defined. I tried all sorts of diffuser combinations but the diffusers just make it darker and killed the little color there was. Jahnsite group suggested by EDS analysis. Jahnsite (Ca,Mn,Fe); APFU from analysis: (Si 0.86) P 9.49 (K 0..42) Ca 3.22 Mn 9.87 Fe 8.42; IMA search options Jahnsite CaMnFe, Jahnsite CaMnMn, Keckite, Wilhelmvierlingite, Zodacite, Bederite Apfus for none of the options are a good match. Jahnsite CaMnFe, is good when normalizing for Ca and P but not for Fe or Mn. |

[bw] In my effort to write these triploidite comments, I thought I should run the EDS results through an IMA chemistry search again. In spite of the lack of O, which is puzzling, I assumed it should be there and I came up with an interesting possibility. When I include O, P, H, Mn, and Fe triploidite does NOT come up. Twelve possibles do, many of which can be eliminated based upon physical characteristics. Kryzhanovskite can be eliminated due to the overwhelming atomic weight of Mn vs Fe. However Landesite fits quite nicely. And, curiously, seeing a Mindat photo of it, I recognized that UK 41 could also be the same material. The crystallization in UK41 looks identical albeit much more minute than in the Mindat photo. I'm not sure 41B fits. That material requires testing to determine its composition. If I remove Fe from the IMA chemistry search, triploidite comes up in a list of seven possibilities. I assume though that triploidite can have a certain amount of Fe substitution even though it doesn't come up in the IMA search with both Mn and Fe. So, the question is, which is this and can EDS determine it? |

A Bob Wilken photo & specimen Notes: [bw] "This is from a 06/2017 find at Turner. Three other rosette photos follow. The rosettes appear to be made up of tissue-thin blades the form of which isn't visible. A Boston College EDS returned these atomic weight %'s: Ca: 9.66, Al: 4.30, P: 9.49, O:67.71 with the Cl outlier of 6.84. So, this is a calcium aluminum phosphate. IMA search results were Bearthite, Cirrolite, Crandallite, Foggite, Gatumbaite, Iangreyite and Uduminelite excluding all other elements (Cl as well). I eliminated all but Foggite and Crandallite based on photo searches and physical descriptions of the alternatives. Aside from the pink color, foggite is the closest chemical and structural candidate. Crandallite crystallography does not conform to these "leafy" masses. Yet the rosettes do not conform to the neat, distinct spherical habit of Palermo foggite either. Yet again, habit may be variable as may be color. My records indicate that an APFU computation indicated that it "roughly fit foggite" with almost 7% of the Cl allocated to O. These rosettes fluoresce a greenish-white in LW. My Palermo foggite fluoresces yellowish in LW. Fluomin claims foggite (from where?) fluoresces bluish-white in LW." Multiple EDS analyses: TUR-UK06 , TUR-UK06A, TUR-UK06redo. Based on probe O6: Al 4.30 P 11.50 (Cl 6.84) Ca 9.66 O 67.71. Assumption Cl is a pollutant. IMA searh options are: Bearthite, Cirrolite, Crandallite, Foggite, Gatumbaite, Iangreyite, Uduminelite. In my opinion the closest morphological match would be iangreyite but the Apfu in no way aligns with it. Iangreyite requires F as well. The apfu for Foggite roughly fits and this is with almost 7% shifted from Cl to O. Color doesn’t fit and the loose masses are in no way similar to the tightly packed spheres of foggite. RETEST - TUR06redo: O-59.60; Mg-0.23;Al-3.07;P-14.33;Ca-15.27;Mn-2.06; Fe-5.38; Cs-0.06. Suggested matches: |

I designated this yet untested acicular material as TUR-UK29 several years after the UK06. Although we believe this to be crandallite, it has yet to be analyzed for positive proof. There is some irony here because the test results for UK06 suggested that IT might be crandallite. The question that remains to be answered is, do we have two distinct forms of crandallite associated closely together or is one of these two UK's something different yet with some slightly different chemistry? Two EDS analyses suggested apatite: analysis #1, and analysis #2. |

As best as I can tell it is yellowish-brown. Associated with these masses are blebs of deteriorating triphylite . All the testing ( analysis #1, and analysis #2) on this keeps coming out as a Mn dominant Fe phosphate. I suspect it’s a member of the reddingite group… or maybe correianevasite. Perhaps Raman can pin this down. |
