Species: LAUEITE Group Locality: Palermo Mine, Groton, NH Specimen Size: 2.2 mm field of view Field Collected: Forrest Fogg material Catalog No.: u2731 Notes: EDS analyses (BC560) indicated a chemistry of Fe1.03Mn0.32Mg0.20P2.0O6.6 . The Fe is more than 3X the Mn, so would seem outside the range for laueite, Mn2+Fe3+2(PO4)2(OH)2 · 8H2O , plus a modest amount of Mg. These do look like they belong to the laueite group. The SEM image reflects the general shape of these crystals. Jim Nizamoff brought to my attention the ferrolaueite species, Fe2+Fe3+2(PO4)2(OH)2•8(H2O). Being an Fe dominant member of the laueite group, ferrolaueite would seem to be a better fit for this specimen, but the total (Fe + Mn) is quite low for my 2 P normalization. George Adleman attempted a Raman spectrum, (9/24), from this specimen, but was unsuccessful. |

Species: WHITMOREITE Locality: Valencia Mine, Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.3 mm field of view Field Collected: Bob Wilken Catalog No.: A Bob Wilken specimen and photo Notes: [bw] The Valencia whitmoreite is what it is...mostly oxidized or weathered looking. Not particularly attractive stuff. |

Species: PARASCHOLZITE - Label Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, Pod 13, Groton, NH Field Collected: Bob Whitmore, collection # 273-25 Catalog No.: u2745 Notes: Red arrow points to small void containing parascholzite sprays. It is remarkable that these were spotted. Matrix apears to be honey-colored massive siderite. I could see no sphalerite on this specimen, just a few small bits of vivianite. The Pegmatite Mines Known as Palermo book states (pg.149) "A rare mineral at the No. 1 mine, parascholzite is found exclusively at site 1, near pod 13. Parascholizite occurs with fine grained apatite, bornite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, near triphylite with a fine-grained siderite rim." |
