In New Hampshire graphite has been mined in Deering, Jaffrey, Nelson and Goshen. The Goshen Mine was owned by former president Franklin Pierce,
as noted in "The Geology of New Hampshire Part II Minerals and Mines", by Meyers and Stewart. |

Species: GRAPHITE Locality: West of soapstone quarry, Canterbury, NH Specimen Size: 2.8 cm specimen with areas of silvery graphite on quartz. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2013 Catalog No.: 1891 Notes: My first thought was that this soft gray metalic-like mineral might be native silver. An EDS analysis showed there were no metalic elements present. Graphite is more common in New Hampshire than many collectors realize. |
