Gormanite-Souzalite appears to be quite rare in the United States. Only one photo of this series is present on mindat.org as of October 2020. It is also a
Charles Davis micro specimen. This species is known from five New Hampshire localities: the Charles Davis, Plume, and Palermo Mines in N. Groton, the Chickering Mine in Walpole and the G.F. Smith Mine in Newport. Gormanite: (Fe2+,Mg)3Al4(PO4)4(OH)6 · 2H2O Souzalite: (Mg,Fe2+)3Al4(PO4)4(OH)6 · 2H2O |

Species: SOUZALITE Locality: Charles Davis Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 4 mm field of view Field Collected: Bob Wilken Catalog No.: u910 Notes: I am labeling the greenish crystal laths as souzalite of the gormanite-souzalite, pending EDS analysis. At Charles Davis, the greenish crystals of the scorzalite-lazulite series have been analyzed to be Mg>Fe, so lazulite. So am taking a "leap of faith" that these greenish crystals of the gormanite-souzalite series are also Mg dominant, so souzalite. From a stack of 104 images processed with Helicon Focus, Method C. |

Species: GORMANITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 4 cm specimen with central band of dark green, embedded, gormanite. Field Collected: Gene Bearss - 1981 Catalog No.: 1958 Notes: Gene had this specimen labeled as "Scorzalite with arrojadite?" Specimen acquired at MMNE silent auction, Oct. 2015, for $4. The blue mineral (upper middle) is scorzalite. The dark green mineral is gormanite. A XRD analysis supports the gormanite identification. The small XRD sample had some silica minerals mixed in. |

Species: GORMANITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 2.3 mm field of view. Gormanite crystals on scorzalite base. 1.4 mm zoom view. Field Collected: Bob Whitmore - from a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob. Catalog No.: u2420 Notes: Gormanite (Fe dominant) forms a series with souzalite (Mg dominant). The color zoning in these crystals suggests both members of this series may be present. These are very nice gormanite crystals for the Palermo Mine. In New Hampshire, the Charles Davis Mine, also in N. Groton, and the Chickering Mine in Walpole have also produced some very nice gormanite micro specimens. |
