Species:           STAUROLITE
Locality:          "Cat Hole Rd." locality, West Side of Green Mtn. Claremont, NH
Specimen Size: 3.3 cm staurolite crystal with attached silvery mica schist.
Field Collected: Dick Holmes & Eric Green
Catalog No.: 1755b
Notes: The front facing surface of this crystal is a vertical cleavage revealing the zonned crystal interior. From the light-colored exterior appearance of these crystals, I thought they might be andalusite. An EDS analysis of the lighter colored mineral zone showed it to be staurolite with a minor zinc content. The EDS analysist said "Staurolite scavenges zinz during formation." The orange-brown interion of the crystal is more typical of an expected staurolite coloration. This glassy orange-brown material has yet to be analyzed.
One may wonder if the staurorite metamorphosis process that formed these crystals was only partially completed, or is the zoning due to an alteration process of previously fully formed crystals?
