Species: FLUORAPATITE on Hydroxylherderite Locality: Keyes Mine, Orange, NH Specimen Size: 10 mm field of view. Powder-blue cluster of fluorapatite crystals on bed of hydroxylherderite Field Collected: Dana Jewell Catalog No.: u1363 Notes: |
Species: APATITE-(CaF) Locality: Chickering Mine, Walpole, NH Specimen Size: 6 mm field of view. Botryodal, cream-colored apatite with clear quartz crystals Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: u1031 Notes: A qualitative EDS analysis identified the species as apatite, but did not differentiate apatite-CaF vs. apatite-CaOH: Analysis: P (2.01) = 949; Ca (3.69) = 1793; Mn (5.90) = 79; Fe (6.40) = 91; Background 3/10 = 61/14 A subsequent WDS analysis during the summer 2013 clearly showed these apatite balls to be fluorapatite, apatite-CaF. The radial structure of these balls is visable in the top right of the photo. |

Species: APATITE-(CaF) Locality: Soapstone Quarry, Richmond, NH Specimen Size: Pale green apatite crystals to 1.3 cm in quartz matrix. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2013 Catalog No.: 1865 Notes: This apatite fluoresces pale yellow. Although Phillip Morrill's New Hampshire Mines and Mineral Localities booklet does list appatite for the Richmond Soapstone Quarry, I have not seen apatite from there previous to 2013. Not outstanding as a New Hampshire apatite specimen, but an interesting locality occurrence. I did not recognize the apatite until after I brought the specimen home, so perhaps more diligent collecting in this milky quartz rock-matrix would produce better examples. |

Species: APATITE var Manganapatite Locality: Parker Mtn. Mine, Center Strafford, NH Specimen Size: 2.2 cm chunk of massive, forrest-green, manganapatite Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: u335 - backside Notes: Fluorapatite var. manganapatite is relatively common on the dumps of the Parker Mtn. Mine. Masses of this mineral approach many inches across. |
